Three Season and Four Season Room Additions

Three and four season rooms are a great way for you and your family and friends to be able to enjoy and connect with the outdoors from your own property, but be able to avoid the inevitable inconveniences like mosquitoes, direct sunlight on hot days, and rain. Being able to sit outside in your three or four season room to watch the sunset and enjoy a light breeze in the summer or drinking your cup of coffee while reading a book on a fall morning while still being warm and comfortable are a couple of reasons why a three or four season room might be the perfect investment for you.

A lot of people struggle with deciding between a three and four season room, so here are pros and cons to each, and some questions you might ask yourself to determine which one might be the best fit for you.

A Three Season Room

A three season room can be enjoyed in mild weather, as there is no heating or cooling installed. They can have either glass or screen windows and are typically enjoyed in Summer, early Fall and late Spring. They shield less from low and high temperatures, but still provide the same level of protection from rain, sun, mosquitoes and dust that four season rooms do.

Pros of a Three Season Room

Being the cheaper option of the two as they don’t usually require the installation of heating and cooling, and they can also be built faster. Depending on the complexity of the design, they can usually be built over an existing concrete slab from a patio or in the area of an existing deck. This means there is less time spent on site preparation. Three season rooms are also generally more open to air flow from outside and it becomes a great space to enjoy and feel more connected to the outdoors.

Cons of a Three Season Room

Three seasons rooms are less desirable to use in colder or hotter weather with the lack of heating and cooling. This means that they are not always used year round.

A Four Season Room

A four season room can be comfortably enjoyed during all four seasons. They are insulated and most have heat and air conditioning so that people are still comfortable during colder and hotter temperatures. They have glass windows that can be opened so that there is still a nice breeze flowing through the space, but they are generally more protected from the elements and act as more of an additional room rather than a closed in porch.

Pros of a Four Season Room

A four season room can be used comfortably, year round. This is a result of being insulated and having heating and cooling so that the temperature can always be comfortable. As a result of their more enclosed nature, they can also increase the property value more than a three season room can. A four season room is perfect for a house that is in a fluctuating climate.

Cons of a Four Season Room

Four season rooms are typically more expensive and typically take longer to build. They are also not as connected to the outdoors because of their more enclosed structure, but they still provide that threshold between your more enclosed home and your backyard.
