Whats your style?

Everyone has a different style; clothing, cars, sense of humor, music, art, list can go on and on…  Every human is unique, and everyone has different tastes.  Much of our stylistic decisions are based on our early childhood development, and our interactions with diversity during development.  What is cool to you may not be cool to someone else.  But as an Architect, you are occasionally asked, “What is your design style?”

Architects tend to develop a signature style that represents them.  For example, the famously known Frank Lloyd Wright is very well known for his prairie style homes with flat and long bricks, low slope roofs and extensive overhangs.  I can go on for hours describing his work, but anyone who knows the works of Mr. Wright can spot one of his buildings very easily.

Another great example is Frank Gehry’s style.  Flashy zinc metal clad buildings with wild curves; his work more resembles a work of modern art instead of buildings.  But yet again, when you see one of his buildings, you know who the Architect was.

What type of style is PegArch?  Do PegArch designs use the prairie model?  Do PegArch designs use the zinc clad sculptural model?  Would you be able to spot a PegArch designed home or building from the street or if you walked your dog past on the sidewalk?

Our design style is not something you can see from the outside.  It is not a rendering, a pretty snapshot at construction completion, or a fancy material.  PegArch’s style is found with-in.  Every client that PegArch takes on becomes a unique part of the story.  Clients hire PegArch because they have a need.  Their family has grown, their family is shrinking, or the house isn’t serving its purpose anymore.  The home is no longer working at 100% efficiency for the inhabitants.  PegArch does not necessarily design pretty pictures that can be defined from the street, but rather we design spaces that are unique to the people living within the walls of the structure.  The style will reflect the lifestyle of the user.  Every client, every family, is different and every client has very specific needs.  Our facades may not be on the cover page of ArchDigest, or Architect magazine, but our homes are designed to address the people that live in them.  Every design that comes out of our office embraces clients needs in a very specific and goal orientated way.

At PegArch, we tend to get very personal with our clients.  We ask lots of questions, and our relationship becomes more like family and is built on trust.  We ask questions about your day; where you eat, coffee or tea, slippers or bare foot, where do you unload groceries, do you host holiday dinners, do you play board games or watch tv at night, and sometimes more personal questions that I will not mention here.  We actively engage our clients with the design, and the design process is an ongoing interview of life and self discovery for our clients.

Our style is reflected in the values and lifestyle of our clients.  Each project is a custom machine to serve the people within.  “A House is a machine for living in” – Le Corbusier
